Luke 7
A centurion needs his servant
healed. The Pharisees vouch for him. They tell Jesus that he is worthy of Jesus
healing his servant because of the good he has done for Israel and that he had
built them a synagogue.
When Jesus starts off to his house
to heal his servant, he sends a message saying, “Do not come to me for I am not
worthy, just say the word and my servant will be healed.” The man was not
appealing to Jesus based upon his own worthiness. He was appealing to Jesus
based upon Jesus’s Lordship, authority, mercy and grace. Jesus marveled at this
great faith. This faith is set in contrast to those who thought that the
Centurion was worthy because they, themselves, were worthy. However, the point
is that neither they nor the Centurion were worthy but Jesus was worthy. The Centurion
got this. Those in the synagogue did not.
