Luke 4
Jesus is tempted of the devil. The
devil knows Scripture but he uses it to try to get Jesus to disobey God. Jesus
sees the devil’s scheme and presents the whole counsel of God. He is using the ‘analogy
of Scripture.” The devil is proof texting but Jesus is letting Scripture
interpret Scripture. Even the devil is a good Bible quoter.
Jesus begins His ministry by quoting
Isaiah. Luke 4: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me
to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and
recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable
year of the Lord.
Immediately after this, He tells the
story of Elijah who was sent not to one of the many widows of Israel but rather
to the widow of Zarephath. He also said that no lepers of Israel were cleansed
but only Naaman, the Syrian. This filled those in the synagogue with wrath and
they sought to kill Jesus.
Interesting how this chapter is put
together. Those in the synagogue knew the Scriptures. They were good proof
texters, like the devil. But Jesus teaches them truths from the Bible that they
despise. They are Bible proof texters that hate the Word of God.
This is especially true when the
Bible calls them up short. It was clear that Jesus was condemning them along
with ancient Israel that did not receive the blessing of God. The widow received
the prophet and the oil (Spirit) that replenished. Naaman was cleansed of his
uncleanness because he humbled himself before the Word of God. He who has an
ear to hear, let him hear.
