The Lord’s Supper
is the climax of our service. The entire service is designed to draw us into
the Godhead. He is our God and we are His people. The motion goes from those
standing outside, summoned into God’s presence, to those standing before Him,
welcomed into His presence, to those seated at His Table as His special guests.
The entire service builds to this point
of a special dedicated meal in our honor. The Lord, Himself, is serving us. It
is like Jesus, at the Last Supper, who girded up His loins and washed the
disciples’ feet. We are in just that privileged position as we sit to dine with
The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.
The fact of God serving us may make us
blanch a bit, as Peter did, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" But Jesus insisted and
told them in John 13:14-15 "If I then, your
Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s
feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you."
So,
too, we are washed by Jesus and fed. And we must learn to serve each other,
loving, washing and feeding as there is need.
