Dear Saints, we often have to
confess our Cainness, that is, our tendency to envy. It is a source of much
evil in a family and evil in the brotherhood. We look at our blessed brother or
sister and it raises our ire.
But what have you been given that is not a gift?
What have you been given that was deserved? Why do you deserve more than your
brother? Why are you mad at him or her when God has smiled on them?
To ask the questions is to answer them. We have been greatly
blessed and should be both thankful and content. When our blood brothers, or our
church brothers are blessed in any way, spiritually, financially, with honors,
children, health, talents, beauty, or any of a host of other blessings, we
should rejoice and bless them and thank our God for His kindness to them.
Any
other response deserves the condemnation of Cain.
So, let us be honest with God
and ourselves and turn away from the temptation to bitterness that defiles
many.
