Peace of Christ

In some churches, right before Communion, there is the passing of the peace. Often, this is simply a time to greet one another and say “The peace of Christ." Some take this seriously as a particular spiritual exercise. Others are uncomfortable with really passing the peace and use this as just another opportunity for fellowship or to catch another moment or two of conversation. But are these two ideas mutually exclusive? Is real fellowship a spiritual discipline?

The Bible teaches that fellowship is the centerpiece of God’s work in our lives. God restores fellowship with us through Jesus Christ and then enables us to fellowship with one another on the same basis. To greet my brothers and sisters in Christ is to reveal the love of the Father, in the Son and by the Spirit. Be at peace with God. Be at peace with one another. This Table is the Peace of Christ.
