When the Chief Shepherd appears, His focus in on the health of the sheep. His desire is that they be fed and kept safe from enemies. He watches over them, guards them, puts Himself in danger, even willing to lay down His life for the sheep. He sets upright those who are cast down. He leads them beside still waters. He restores their soul. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, the Chief Shepherd gently leads His sheep, through the dark valley into green pastures.
Jesus’s desire is the health, restoration, and perseverance of His flock. This Table is about all of that. When Jesus has compassion on His sheep, He does not leave them to fend for themselves. He provides a meal and just such a meal as to make the sheep fat and happy.
We now eat and drink because Jesus is feeding us. He is the Good Shepherd and Shepherd fed people are well fed people. Eat and drink in faith. Be made whole and strong in Jesus.
