In today’s sermon, the
Ephesians have most things right. They resist false teachers. They expose
sexual immorality in the church. They appear to be regular churchgoers. This is
all good but the one thing the Lord has against them is a very serious charge.
He says that they have lost their first love. This is very
much something worth thinking about. If you are a Christian of 5, 10, 20 or 40
years, then the danger is present for you. Have your duties in Christ grown
old? Is service to Him ho hum? Do you take His manifold blessings for granted?
His answer to the Ephesians is not to try harder or do more.
He points to the real problem. They don’t love the Lord their God with all of
their heart, soul, strength and mind. The way out of this is not to will oneself
to love more but rather to repent of the lack of love, the lack of loyalty and
fidelity. Repentance, confession, forgiveness and restoration rekindles love
and zeal.
