On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came with
power and filled the Church in a new way. The Holy Spirit is the Eternal God,
equal in power and glory with the Father and the Son. He did not begin His work
on the Earth at Pentecost but it is clear that something monumental happened
that day.
The Lord Jesus had ascended to the
right hand of the Father to rule Heaven and Earth. He then sent us His Spirit
so that we would enter into that rule with Him in power. The Holy Spirit is the
animating life of Jesus among His people. The Spirit filled the church that day
in a way that would insure that the glory of God would fill the whole Earth.
And the Spirit did not just fill the church in general but rather He sat upon
each one, each upper room disciple, as a tongue of fire. He called them to be
witnesses to the life, death, resurrection and ruling authority of Jesus.
The
Spirit calls us to the same task. We are to be witnesses to God’s glory in
Christ Jesus. To this end, we eat and drink, partaking of both the death and
life of Jesus. Sin is defeated on the cross and life is guaranteed in the
Resurrection. It is God’s Holy Spirit that has revealed this truth to us.
