When someone asks you, Do you
want the good news first or the bad news, we Christians know the answer. Give
us the bad news first. Bad news preps us for hope.
Our condition as fallen men is bad news. We are separated
from God and men through the original and continuing effects of sin. Even we
who are in Christ feel the power of sin waging a war in our mortal bodies. We
struggle against sin but at times we succumb to the temptation and sin or even fall
into a habit of sin. The bad news is that the wages of that sin is death. When
you sin you earn exactly what you get, trouble in this life and damnation in
the life to follow.
But thanks be to God, that the fact of sin and its damnable
consequences awakens in us a desire to put things right. This is the power of
the Holy Spirit leading us to the good news in Jesus Christ. Have you sinned? Are
you aware of the penalty for sin? It’s bad news. But thanks be to God that
where sin abounds, grace doth much more abound. That is good news. Come to
Jesus, confess your sins and be forgiven.
